An outdoor dining area doesn’t have to be overthought: with just a few purchased items you can put together a space with minimal DIY skills.
Step 1: Find the Perfect Spot: First, find a shaded area in your yard, especially if you live in a hot climate. Shade keeps you cool and gives the space a defined, intimate feel.
Step 2: Prepare the Ground: I leveled the area with a rake, removed any roots, and used a class 2 base and gravel to create a basic patio. This is an easy and affordable way to prepare your space.
Step 3: Add an Outdoor Rug: Next, I placed an outdoor rug on top of the gravel. I used a 9×11 rug, perfect for a six to eight-person table. The rug allowed water to wick through and kept the area dry.
Step 4: Choose Your Dining Set: I found a nine-piece dining set online that is ideal for a big family. If you’re on a budget, consider looking on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist, especially around holidays when people are often selling great furniture at discounted prices.
Step 5: Add Lighting: Lighting is crucial for creating a cozy ambiance. I found decorative star features and wired them to the landscape lighting. If that sounds too complex, you can simply hang bistro lights and plug them in. This small addition will make your dining area more inviting and usable in the evenings.
This setup has lasted me for years and still looks fantastic! The outdoor rug adds a nice softness to the space and has held up well.
